Michael Steiner was born in New York in 1945. He began exhibiting his work at the age of 18. Over the years, his sculpture has evolved from an early exploration of minimal “primary structures” to an intensive exploration of the legacy of Cubist construction. Steiner is considered a leading member of the Bennington school, a group of abstract artists associated with Bennington College in Vermont. The artist's sophisticated sculptures feature geometrical shapes and patterns and often explore the tension between our perceptions of repetition and symmetry.
The artist has had many solo exhibitions, including at Grounds for Sculpture, in Hamilton, NJ, the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, FL, Andre Emmerich Gallery, New York, and Marlborough Gallery, New York, to name a few. His works are in numerous public collections, such as Centre Georges Pompidou, Beauborg, Paris, Denver Art Museum, Denver, CO, Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse, NY, the Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, MA, and Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY.
