About the Item
"In the Wings" Wood Panel Original Painting and Carving
Carved sculpture and painting by Mickey "Kano" Kane (American, 20th century). This wall sculpture features a bold, symmetrical, abstract design, reminiscent of a geological or anatomical cross section. The muted tones and fluid, carved contours of the piece reinforce its organic inspiration. The variety of texture and surface finishing within the piece provide subtle contrast between the different elements.
Kano's work is outsider art - characterized by its creation outside the boundaries of mainstream art and often by self-taught or unconventional artists. Outsider art encompasses a diverse range of artists, including self-taught visionaries, psychiatric patients, and those outside the mainstream art world.
Titled, signed, and dated on verso:
"In the Wings" Kano 94
Panel size: 48"H x 72"W
Mickey “Kano” Kane (American, 1939-2002) was born in Illinois and grew up in Sacramento, CA. Kane moved to the Pacific Coast and worked on mixed media panels - which he would refer to as a “Totem” – and detailed collage compositions. His collage work is generally satirical or critical in nature, frequently dealing with themes of money, capitalism, government, power, and debt. By contrast, his “Totem” sculptural work is abstract and free of direct symbolism, focusing instead on the aesthetics of the composition.

Artist’s Statement:
The Totem is indicative of the unfolding 21st Century, graphically and metaphorically. It is neither one side nor the other, nor does one side challenge or compete with the other. Each side cooperates and thus enhances the other so that both "sides" transcend that definition into a composition revealing that, indeed, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The Totem reflects the inner harmony that all sides, whether two or two thousand, are striving to manifest in their own inimitable way.

Chapel, 1948-2021, Artist's Statement:
“I was raised on the Western Slope of Colorado, with almost unfettered access to the American wilderness. I currently reside on a sailboat in Oakland, CA with my studio in nearby San Leandro. I work with permanent materials including bronze, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and stone. It is my contention that a work of art must include a complete environment, not just a single object. In my opinion, it is very difficult to convey meaning with either pure abstraction, or pure representation. Describing an abstract concept with another abstraction does not define the subject.
There is nothing in a completely non-objective artwork from the viewers experience upon which to base some meaning. One the other hand, a completely realistic presentation doesn't define an abstraction any better than a dictionary. This is why my sculpture is a blend - the symbolic joining of modern man with primitive experience.
They are in-depth studies of the archetypes and symbols used to communicate their relevance to our everyday lives. Mythology, poetry and art are humanity's attempt to describe the mysteries of life which are beyond our ability to consciously comprehend. This is the appeal of the visual arts, poetry, literature and music; they excite an emotional response, or memory that transcends mere words.” - Ron Chapel...

Abstract Mixed Media Biomorphism Wall Sculpture. Miami Artist Carol K Brown
By Carol K. Brown
Located in Surfside, FL
This is a wall sculpture of a protruding abstract organic appendage form. They are in the form of Surrealist fantastic flora and fauna. It is from her 1990-1995 series called tondos & squares. This is a mixed media sculpture composed of plastic/resin (it looks like blackened steel), rubber and metal wire. Hand signed verso. This sale is for one. I have 5 of them available, they make a great wall installation grouping.
Carol K. Brown is an American woman artist born in Memphis, Tennessee and lives and works in New York and Miami Beach, Florida. Brown works with sculpture, painting, photography, video, digital and installation art. She has received the State of Florida Fine Arts Fellowship (1983), Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art Fellowship (1986), and two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship (1984 and 1986).
