About the Item

Transform any interior or exterior into a truly unique space with the dynamic works of an acclaimed sculptor Naomi Press. Naomi Press was one of the very few women working in large scale with steel in the second half of the 20th Century. Her works are on par with such artists as Beverly Pepper, Claire Falkenstein, and Louise Nevelson. Acclaimed New York dealer André Emmerich was thoroughly impressed with her work and exhibited it in his sculpture park, Top Gallant Farm. Aesthetic beauty and masterful craftsmanship of Press were also admired by arguably one of the most influential critics of the abstract expressionist era, Clement Greenberg. Press started working with steel, embracing the development of Modernist sculpture, when the object of art steps down from its base, enters the space of the viewer, and confronts the public face to face. She was one of the first sculptors to employ this groundbreaking idea. Naomi Press' works would be a wonderful addition to any outdoor or indoor space. Her elegant sculptures and their curved forms will enhance any scene. The smooth surfaces of the hard material and flowing shapes interact with the surroundings in which the artwork is placed, reacting to light and atmosphere. Press’ creations become an integral part of the environment they are placed in.

Abstract Expressionist Biomorphic Welded Metal Sculpture
By Seymour Lipton
Located in Surfside, FL
Welded, brazed sculpture on wooden base This is not signed or dated This work is unsigned. We were told it was the work of Seymour Lipton but as there is further documentation we are selling it as attributed and cannot guarantee it as such. Seymour Lipton (1903 – 1986) was an American abstract expressionist sculptor. He was a member of the New York School who gained widespread recognition in the 1950s. He initially trained as a dentist, like fellow sculptor Herbert Ferber, receiving his degree from Columbia University in 1927. In the late 1920s, he began to explore sculpture, creating clay portraits of family members and friends. His early choices of medium changed from wood to lead and then to bronze, and he is best known for his work in metal. Like his contemporary, Abstract Expressionist Jackson Pollock, and Arshile Gorky Lipton was influenced by Carl Jung’s work on the unconscious mind and the regenerative forces of nature. He translated these two-dimensional drawings into three-dimensional maquettes that enabled him to revise his ideas before creating the final sculpture. The forms that Lipton produced during this period were often zoomorphic, exemplifying the tension between the souls of nature and the automatism of the machine. He made several technical innovations, including brazing nickel silver rods onto sheets of Monel to create rust resistant forms. Seymour Lipton is best known for his textured torch welded metal sculptures...

"Untitled" Sidney Gordin, Abstract Metal Steel Sculpture
By Sidney Gordin
Located in New York, NY
Sidney Gordin Untitled, 1958 Incised with initials Welded Steel 15 x 10 1/2 x 6 inches Provenance: Eric Firestone Gallery, New York On October 24, 1918, Sidney Gordin was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He spent his early years in Shanghai, China. At the age of four, he moved with his family to New York. Gordin’s nephew, Eliot Nemzer recalls that when Gordin was a child he attended “a dinner party with his parents. Someone showed him a book of pictures that when thumbed through quickly made the image appear to move. This person then gave him a wad of blank papers and something to write with. Sid created a similar type of moving image with his materials. All the adults at the party became quite excited [and] praised his efforts. Sid told me he thought this was a pivotal experience in guiding him towards his vocation.” During his formative years at Brooklyn Technical High School, he briefly contemplated the idea of becoming an architect; yet, by the time he enrolled at Cooper Union, he was determined to become a professional artist. There, he studied under Morris Kantor (1896-1974) and Leo Katz...
