About the Item
In the 1960’s, Canadian Otto Rogers was one of the first artists to create abstract sculptures out of welded steel and continued to do so during his long career. The elegant curves and the striking shape of this piece in steel and copper suggests musical movement and rhythm.
Saskatchewan born Rogers (1935-2019) was recognized early in his career by the renowned British sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro who stated that Rogers' work, ‘had a kind of magic about it,’ and that it was ‘so original, unexpected. Absolutely his own.’ A devout follower of the Baha’i faith, Otto Rogers did not view art as simply a ‘decorative thing.’

He acquired his MA in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin and later taught art at the University of Saskatchewan for 29 years. Rogers also participated in the Emma Lake Workshops in BC which attracted some of North America’s finest artists. His work is held in private and more than 30 public collections including: the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Otto Rogers
Otto Rogers, depicts a geometric landscape using neutral colour tones. Rogers was born in 1935 in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan. He attended the Saskatchewan Teachers College (1954) and received a Bachelor of Science in Art Education (1958) and a Masters in Fine Art (1959) from the University of Wisconsin. As Professor and Head of the Department of Art at the University of Saskatchewan (1959–88), Rogers helped revive the Emma Lake Artist Workshops, Saskatchewan (1971–87). From 1988–98, Rogers lived in Haifa, Israel, where he served two five-year terms as a Counselor member of the International Teaching Center at the World Centre for the Baháʼí Faith. Following those years, he lived and worked in Prince Edward County, Ontario until his passing in late April 2019. Rogers' works are found in over 1600 major public, corporate and private collections in North America, Asia and Europe including Art Gallery of Ontario, Edmonton Art Gallery, Mendel Art Gallery, Saskatoon; Montreal Museum of Art; Museum of Contemporary Art, Barcelona Spain; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the National Gallery of Canada; Bank of Montreal; General Foods and Scotiabank.

This polished, geometric, abstract, painted steel sculpture is by artist Alexander Caldwell. This tabletop sculpture consists of several stainless steel spheres of different sizes welded together to form a tower-like shape, mounted on a wooden base. Caldwell’s signature paint finish—layers of glossy paint mask the seams of each component so they appear cohesive. The distinctive iridescent paint of Nebula changes color from blue-green to light purple in different light conditions. A nebula is a cloud of gas or dust in outer space.
