Embrace (Light Blue) by Patricia Volk - Abstract ceramic sculpture, blue, vivid

2019

About the Item

Embrace (Light Blue) is a Fired clay constructed and painted sculpture by Patricia Volk, dimensions are 46 × 52 × 34 cm (18.1 × 20.4 × 13.4 in). It is a unique signed piece and comes with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. A striking light-blue sculpture featuring a dynamic interplay of flowing curves and sharp angles, brought together in a bold and confident structural design. Patricia Volk creates abstract sculptures through a distinctive fusion of form and colour. Her artistic journey begins with her cutting into clay—her preferred medium—as she searches for what she considers the ideal line: one that is both simple and full of energy. After being fired, the individual components are assembled into the final sculptural form. As she notes: “There is no pre-thought at all, it either works or it does not. There is such simplicity in a good line that it is completely underestimated, because it is so incredibly difficult […] but so aesthetically pleasing.” Influenced by the American tradition of painted fired clay, Patricia finishes her pieces using acrylic paints. She selects colour combinations instinctively and personally, though always with deliberate care. Her use of bold, saturated hues brings out the sculptural lines and underlines the tensions and harmonies within the work—between strength and delicacy, solidity and imbalance, weight and airiness. These elements can evoke a wide range of responses in the viewer, from calm and serenity to tension and motion. Patricia Volk holds the title of Fellow of the Royal Society of Sculptors (FRSS), a prestigious British institution dedicated to promoting excellence in sculpture, and she is also an Academician of the Royal West of England Academy (RWA). Her work has recently been included in the publication “50 Women Sculptors”, featured alongside renowned figures such as Camille Claudel, Barbara Hepworth, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Louise Bourgeois.

After many years of artistic productions in 2006, he discovered a new material for his artworks: ceramic. "With my artworks I want to transmit energy” — Otto Piene He created wonderful mural reliefs in ceramic. He dropped viscous varnish through different raster-barriers on a prepared clay platter. Not only the setting of the platinum drops creates the individual and unique look of each work but also their convex and interleaving forms. The slight convexity of the platinum varnish drops reflects the light and gives the artwork a discreet white shine. With the mélange of archaic and modern elements, Piene achieves an impressing artwork with this powerful material. OTTO PIENE Otto Piene is one of the most important German post-war artists. In 1957- Otto Piene and Heinz Mack founded the group ZERO. Otto Piene is one of the most important German post-war artists. Born in 1929 Otto Piene was brought up in Lübeck (Germany) and, after his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and Düsseldorf, he completed his academic education with studies on philosophy at the University of Cologne. In 1957- Otto Piene and Heinz Mack founded the group ZERO; which Günther Uecker joined in 1961. Their aim was to create a recommencement of contemporary art, starting at the point ZERO with new artworks emphasizing predominantly on light. Piene primarily aimed in his artworks to visualize light, fire, and air; so he started to create Op-Art inspired raster paintings, followed by smoke and fire...
