About the Item

This contemporary indoor metal sculpture was hand forged by Philippe Pallafray. The dynamic abstract work of Philippe Pallafray has found an international audience. The Quebec based artist has developed a distinctive visual style that uses bold geometric forms in industrial materials and marries them with organic shapes. This piece is made from stainless steel, stone and aluminum. Reminiscent of a ‘see-saw’, two spheres sit opposite one another—one precariously balancing at the tip of an angled patinated beam. The second sphere resides inside the beam at the base of the sculpture that sits on a rugged chunk of gray stone. The highly polished surface of the spheres reflects light and its surroundings—a signature detail of Pallafray’s work that is designed to interact with its environment. One in a series. “I use industrial steel components that I shape, cut into sheets, fold, weld, and patinate. I use certain mobile components so my pieces offer change from different angles. I also leave room for empty space – like a vacuum, evoking disappearance, absence, and loss. The changing elements and empty spaces in my pieces reference the creative force of our perpetually evolving societies.” Philippe Pallafray Philippe Pallafray is a member of the Sculptors Society of Canada. Born in France, he emigrated to Canada several years ago and currently lives in Ile d’Orléans, Québec. Pallafray's sculptures have been exhibited in Canada and the United States both as part of group and solo exhibitions. They are also part of public and private collections in Canada, France, Hong Kong, South Korea, Sri Lanka and the United States.

Geyser - tall, contemporary, abstract, stainless steel, outdoor, sculpture
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Quebec sculptor Bernard Hamel often looks to nature as a source of inspiration for his contemporary sculptures. Geyser emulates the fluid form of a spout of water erupting from the ground and shooting skyward. Forged from fine individual rods of stainless steel, this elegant and dynamic shape suggests turbulent motion. Geysers are a rare natural phenomenon. Hamel prefers to work in a variety of materials including wood and metals, often incorporating the sculpture into a natural environment. “My sculptural approach is essentially based on a direct relationship with the material….The material directs my gestures, determines my choices and the tools allow me, with their singularity, to model these shapes. Memories meet material to transform into a sculptural form with organic lines.” Bernard Hamel Bernard Hamel was born in Quebec and lives and works in St. Roch des Aulnaies. He completed a bachelor’s degree in visual arts at UQAM with a focus on sculpture. To perfect his knowledge of wood he completed a course in cabinetmaking at the Institut québécois d’ébénisterie, in Quebec. In 2005, he took a woodturning course with Jean-François Escoulen and André Martel, two internationally renowned turners. Since 1999, Hamel has taught sculpture at the Maison des Métiers d’Art de Québec. He has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in Quebec and participated in international symposia including the Camille Claudel Sculpture...

Chapel, 1948-2021, Artist's Statement: “I was raised on the Western Slope of Colorado, with almost unfettered access to the American wilderness. I currently reside on a sailboat in Oakland, CA with my studio in nearby San Leandro. I work with permanent materials including bronze, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and stone. It is my contention that a work of art must include a complete environment, not just a single object. In my opinion, it is very difficult to convey meaning with either pure abstraction, or pure representation. Describing an abstract concept with another abstraction does not define the subject. There is nothing in a completely non-objective artwork from the viewers experience upon which to base some meaning. One the other hand, a completely realistic presentation doesn't define an abstraction any better than a dictionary. This is why my sculpture is a blend - the symbolic joining of modern man with primitive experience. They are in-depth studies of the archetypes and symbols used to communicate their relevance to our everyday lives. Mythology, poetry and art are humanity's attempt to describe the mysteries of life which are beyond our ability to consciously comprehend. This is the appeal of the visual arts, poetry, literature and music; they excite an emotional response, or memory that transcends mere words.” - Ron Chapel...
