Rebecca Johnson
"Seep" basalt stone sculpture

2022

About the Item

In Rebecca Johnson's stone sculpture “Seep,” two lusciously polished basalt raindrops seem caught in transition, either still emerging from or melting back into the textured basalt base below, unable to fully materialize. An optional old growth redwood base is available as shown on the third alternate view. Inspired by the parched Northern California climate, the sculptures in Johnson's 'Rain Collection' serve as both a celebration of rain as the source of all life, and an expression of anguish at the extreme weather causing so much harm. Rebecca Johnson grew up in an art-centric family in rural Hopewell, New Jersey. Her parents were designers, artists, and art educators and "Life is Art" was the family credo. This philosophy enriched and continues to inform Johnson's art and career. She received her BFA from Tyler School of Art and her MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She studied bronze casting at the Johnson Atelier in New Jersey and stone carving in quarries in Vermont. Grants, fellowships, shows in galleries and museums, commissions, critical acclaim, and teaching positions at Dartmouth and Kenyon Colleges distinguished her career.  Johnson now lives and works in Mendocino County in Northern California, a place of raw elemental forces. She creates paintings inside a large renovated barn at her studio in the Anderson Valley. The doors of the studio open to a hillside meadow filled with her stone sculpture. The calm beauty of this rural place resonates from her work.

Pisapia's "Expedition Series," inspired by sea voyages, is about meeting life’s challenges with courage and purpose. It connects to the idea expressed by J.W. Goethe: “Character is formed in the stormy billows of the world.” Taking up life’s tasks can require one to go against the wind. The feeling of determination to achieve and continue steering through obstacles is poured into the pure forms; a dynamic balancing of the straight and curve on different axes. "With a rounded starting point," Pisapia explains, "I add on a variety of disparate angles, diverse curves, and twisting planes. I carve and smooth the surfaces, bringing out particular tensions and transitions." Flavius Valone Pisapia is an Italian-Romanian artist born in Bucharest in 1981. He completed his higher education in the UK, with an MA in Transpersonal Arts & Therapy, 2014; a Diploma in Transformative Arts, 2011; and a BA (Hons) in Film and Video, 2005. Pisapia studied sculpture throughout his higher education and appreciated several sculptor mentors in the UK. Since 2016, he has resided in India, where he is currently an artist in residence at Studio Sukriti in Jaipur. He has had several solo exhibitions in India and his artwork is found in private collections worldwide. "It's important for me to experience the world at a deeper level by penetrating the veil of the senses. Through an immersive process the essence, beauty and the pure form of an idea are gradually revealed to me. The emerging awareness flows into my artwork imbuing it with a higher reality. To achieve this awareness in my creative process, I go through three stages: imagination, inspiration and intuition." - Flavius Pisapia

It is in excellent, like-new, condition. Shipping price includes the custom packing necessary for safe transport of fine art. Chapel, 1948-2021, Artist's Statement: “I was raised on the Western Slope of Colorado, with almost unfettered access to the American wilderness. I currently reside on a sailboat in Oakland, CA with my studio in nearby San Leandro. I work with permanent materials including bronze, steel, stainless steel, aluminum, glass and stone. It is my contention that a work of art must include a complete environment, not just a single object. In my opinion, it is very difficult to convey meaning with either pure abstraction, or pure representation. Describing an abstract concept with another abstraction does not define the subject. There is nothing in a completely non-objective artwork from the viewers experience upon which to base some meaning. One the other hand, a completely realistic presentation doesn't define an abstraction any better than a dictionary. This is why my sculpture is a blend - the symbolic joining of modern man with primitive experience. They are in-depth studies of the archetypes and symbols used to communicate their relevance to our everyday lives. Mythology, poetry and art are humanity's attempt to describe the mysteries of life which are beyond our ability to consciously comprehend. This is the appeal of the visual arts, poetry, literature and music; they excite an emotional response, or memory that transcends mere words.” - Ron Chapel...
