About the Item

Roger Phillips (American, 1930-2022) Figure Eight on Open Rectangle, 2006 Signed: Roger Phillips 2006 #2/6 on edge of base Stainless steel and painted aluminum 90 x 33 x 47 1/2 inches Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist Red Figure Eight creates a classic and clean feel through the rich stunning red circles that are complemented by the stainless steel. This type of work can make a traditional room transition to one with contemporary elements or strengthen a contemporary interior with some "pop". Phillips’ technique involves securing moving elements at both the top and bottom, ensuring stability while allowing freedom of movement. There is still a sense of order and yet also one of playfulness. Who can resist the temptation of spinning these simple yet meticulously engineered circles that move kinetically and thrill both the eye and the touch of the viewer? The complete lack of pretension appeals to the inner child in all of us—young and old alike. The small-scale sculptures of Roger Phillips integrate beautifully in any interior setting. Their primary colors and geometric form create a “punctuation” and focal point to any room. There is an obvious influence from Alexander Calder seen in any of Phillips’ work, with its strong line, geometric form and distinctive white color being used to elicit a kinetic energy and motion. This work is well described on Phillips’ website: There is a provocative contrast between the rigidity of the frame and the fluidity of the moving elements that seemingly disappear and reappear as they revolve, revealing the surrounding landscape through the negative space. In motion the sculptures appear light and airy as their glossy, colored surfaces reflect their natural surroundings. Phillips was a key figure in contemporary sculpture, known for elegant kinetic works that blend form, motion, and craftsmanship. Born in New York City, his early blacksmith apprenticeship and studies at Woodstock Country School under Francis Foster, linked to Black Mountain College and Bauhaus ideals, shaped his precise and conceptually clear approach. After graduating from Bard College in 1953, he further honed his skills in drawing, design, and metalwork, integrating engineering with artistic vision.
