About the Item
This contemporary sculptural vessel was handmade by Steven Heinemann.
Critics and collectors alike laud this Canadian artist’s distinctive aesthetic that has redefined the limits of ceramic art. Steven Heinemann has explored the ancient form of the vessel or bowl for decades. His work is inspired by the natural world and ancient history.
This tabletop sculptural ceramic vessel is hand-built —its oblong exterior a matte slate gray and its interior a speckled dark gray and deep blue. Heinemann spends days meticulously building up fine layers of clay slip, and as each layer dries, it naturally shrinks and cracks. Small perforations in the clay—the air pockets revealed in the casting process provide additional visible detail and texture, a signature of Heinemann’s work. Two circles appear in the base of the interior.

Steven Heinemann earned an MFA from Alfred University, NY, in 1983 and has taught in Canada and the US. Heinemann has exhibited continuously since his first solo exhibition at the Ontario Crafts Council in 1982. His work is held in museums the world over. Heinemann has received many national and international awards.

Steven Heinemann
Since completing his MFA at Alfred University in 1983, Steven Heinemann (RCA) has taught widely in Canada and the United States. He has exhibited continuously since his first solo show at the Ontario Crafts Council in 1982, and his work is part of numerous public collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), Museum Of Fine Arts (Boston), Icheon World Ceramic Centre (Korea), National Museum of History (Taiwan), the Museum of Art and Design (New York), Museum Boymans van Beuningen (Rotterdam) and the Contemporary Museum (Honolulu). Heinemann has received national and international awards, including the Bavarian State Prize (Germany), the Juror's Award (Mino, Japan), Fletcher Challenge (New Zealand) and in 1996, he was granted the Saidye Bronfman Award, Canada’s highest recognition of achievement in contemporary craft.
