About the Item

No.061222 is an abstract sculpture in wood by French sculptor Thierry Martenon. This large-scale sculpture weaves together richly textured geometric forms, establishing a dynamic interplay of rhythm and tension. The artist uses India ink with varying degrees of dilution to distinguish each shape and intensify the visual contrasts. Dimensions are 230 × 170 × 10 cm (90.6 × 66.9 × 3.9 in). Thierry Martenon’s sculptures are defined by their pure, minimalist lines, harmonious fluid forms, and meticulously refined textures. His artistic practice is deeply rooted in aesthetics and demonstrates exceptional technical skill. His work conveys a timeless elegance while reflecting a continual pursuit of renewal and originality. Rather than titling his pieces, the artist assigns them numbers based on the year of creation. Martenon lives and works in his native village in the Chartreuse massif in Savoie. The surrounding forests and mountains are an integral part of his daily life and serve as a constant source of inspiration. Shapes and textures found in nature—rock formations, bark, or fungi—nurture his imagination. Each piece begins with drawing, a crucial step in refining the ideal form. The choice of wood is especially selective, based on rigorous criteria. He works exclusively with local species such as ash, spruce, walnut, and maple. In the calm of his workshop, Martenon sculpts his works using traditional woodworking tools, drawing on his cabinetmaking background. For the final touches, he experiments with techniques such as brushing, burning, sandblasting, engraving, and the application of Indian ink patinas or lacquers. His goal is to produce deeply textured pieces that interact with light—because, as the artist states: “It is the light that animates the piece of wood, it is the light that makes it vibrate.” The resulting interplay of light and shadow brings movement to the material. From his secluded studio in the foothills of the Alps, Martenon’s sculptures have entered prestigious private collections worldwide. He has also exhibited at prominent institutions, including the Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. “I don’t recognise myself in the word artist, I’m a sculptor; it’s not the thought, it’s the gesture that defines me. Some people talk about the intelligence of the hand, and I like that.” – Thierry Martenon
