About the Item
No.091122 is an abstract walnut wood, India ink and walnut ink patina sculpture by French sculptor Thierry Martenon. Marked by its vertical form and symbolic motifs, this piece echoes the aesthetic of totemic sculptures. The artist contrasts two distinct surface treatments within the work: one section is hammered, while the other is finely scratched, creating a dynamic interplay of textures. The artwork is sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Dimensions are 95 × 46 × 10 cm (37,4 x 18.1 x 3,9 in).
Thierry Martenon’s sculptural language is defined by purity of line, fluid and harmonious contours, and an exceptional attention to surface detail. His practice is deeply rooted in aesthetics, supported by a high level of technical precision. Rather than naming his pieces, the artist simply numbers them according to the year of creation, allowing form and material to speak for themselves.
Working from his native village in the Chartreuse mountains of Savoie, Martenon finds endless inspiration in his natural surroundings. The patterns and textures found in rocks, bark, and forest undergrowth subtly influence his shapes and surfaces. Every piece begins with drawing, a vital part of the search for the perfect form. The wood selection process is meticulous, with the sculptor choosing only local species such as ash, spruce, walnut, and maple that meet specific standards.
In his peaceful workshop, Martenon carves each piece using traditional woodworking tools, drawing on his background in cabinetmaking. He experiments with distinctive finishing techniques—burning, brushing, engraving, sandblasting—and adds finishes like Indian ink patinas or lacquer. His objective is to heighten the wood’s surface texture so that it interacts dynamically with light. As the artist puts it: “It is the light that animates the piece of wood, it is the light that makes it vibrate.”
From his secluded studio in the Prealps, Martenon’s work now reaches collectors and exhibitions around the globe. His sculptures have been featured in prominent institutions such as the Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
“I don’t recognise myself in the word artist, I’m a sculptor; it’s not the thought, it’s the gesture that defines me. Some people talk about the intelligence of the hand, and I like that.” — Thierry Martenon.
