About the Item

No.210624 is an abstract sculpture in wood by French sculptor Thierry Martenon. A group of textured, pointed, and curved sculptures reminiscent of a forest of sculptural forms. The artwork is sold with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Dimensions are 194 × 400 × 80 cm (76.3 × 157.4 × 31.5 in). The dimensions are approximate and may vary depending on how the five pieces are arranged. Individual piece dimensions: 194 H x 90 W x 42 D cm 184 H x 115 W x 42 D cm 165 H x 140 W x 42 D cm 139 H x 100 W x 42 D cm 90 H x 125 W x 42 D cm In this piece, the artist has charred the wood's surface using a blowtorch, purely for aesthetic purposes. He is particularly fond of this technique as it reveals a deep, silky black: “Burning the wood produces very deep blacks and this always reveals the texture of the wood, the deep nature of the wood.” Thierry Martenon’s sculptural language is defined by purity of line, fluid and harmonious contours, and an exceptional attention to surface detail. His practice is deeply rooted in aesthetics, supported by a high level of technical precision. Rather than naming his pieces, the artist simply numbers them according to the year of creation, allowing form and material to speak for themselves. Working from his native village in the Chartreuse mountains of Savoie, Martenon finds endless inspiration in his natural surroundings. The patterns and textures found in rocks, bark, and forest undergrowth subtly influence his shapes and surfaces. Every piece begins with drawing, a vital part of the search for the perfect form. The wood selection process is meticulous, with the sculptor choosing only local species such as ash, spruce, walnut, and maple that meet specific standards. In his peaceful workshop, Martenon carves each piece using traditional woodworking tools, drawing on his background in cabinetmaking. He experiments with distinctive finishing techniques—burning, brushing, engraving, sandblasting—and adds finishes like Indian ink patinas or lacquer. His objective is to heighten the wood’s surface texture so that it interacts dynamically with light. As the artist puts it: “It is the light that animates the piece of wood, it is the light that makes it vibrate.” From his secluded studio in the Prealps, Martenon’s work now reaches collectors and exhibitions around the globe. His sculptures have been featured in prominent institutions such as the Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle in Paris and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. “I don’t recognise myself in the word artist, I’m a sculptor; it’s not the thought, it’s the gesture that defines me. Some people talk about the intelligence of the hand, and I like that.” — Thierry Martenon.
