About the Item
White flat cloud & White curved cloud is a set of two ceramic sculptures by contemporary artist Tien Wen from the series “Closed vases”.
These sculptures are iconic of Tien Wen’s work with their purity, their play with forms and volumes, opposing curves and lines as well as curves and angles. If their shapes resemble those of a vase, the artist’s interest is focused only on the form, without thought for any practicality. Tien Wen even goes so far as to seal the top of the artwork to prevent the viewer seeing a useful object or a purpose. She admits: “I want the artwork to exist by form, by line.”
The viewer is also drawn in by the round shape emerging from the sculpture’s centre, which causes a visual break and a different reflection of the light on the piece. Inside the round form the artist has drawn a pattern similar to clouds. This pattern gives the name to the piece.

Tien Wen
Born in Taipei, Tien Wen grew up with a respect for the arts and traditional Chinese culture. She left Taiwan for France in the late 1980s, and has since devoted her artistic work to sculpture and ceramics. Her work revolves around the idea of abstraction, purity and the interplay of shapes and volumes, contrasting curves with lines and roundness with angles. Her minimalist works highlight the fragile balance sought by the artist in the form of her sculptures. Tien Wen uses and blends several techniques, including the Japanese Raku technique. “I had decided at some point to close all my pieces looking like vases because I didn’t want people to see it as something useful anymore. I wanted the piece to exist by shape and line.”
