About the Item
Spinning-top is a unique ceramic sculpture by contemporary artist Tien Wen, dimensions are 57 × 24 × 24 cm (22.4 × 9.4 × 9.4 in).
The sculpture is signed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The sculpture has a metallic quality that is similar to bronze because of the raku technique, which is dear to the artist. This piece is named after a Roman heating system from Gallo-Roman times. Roman baths' subterranean oven, which is continuously lit on fire. The oven temperature reached a temperature of 1000 degrees while creating this piece. The hypocauste of Tien Wen warms the body and spirit.
Tien Wen naturally concentrated her work on pottery at the end of the 1990s due to her early fascination with Chinese porcelains, particularly the colours, enamel and celadons. As the years went by, the artist's love of shapes and the material itself led her to abandon the functional aspect and create more abstract works. The artist just follows her instinct and makes pieces in accordance with the lines that come to mind, giving her a clear vision of the finished product, while looking for the purest of shapes.

Tien Wen
Born in Taipei, Tien Wen grew up with a respect for the arts and traditional Chinese culture. She left Taiwan for France in the late 1980s, and has since devoted her artistic work to sculpture and ceramics. Her work revolves around the idea of abstraction, purity and the interplay of shapes and volumes, contrasting curves with lines and roundness with angles. Her minimalist works highlight the fragile balance sought by the artist in the form of her sculptures. Tien Wen uses and blends several techniques, including the Japanese Raku technique. “I had decided at some point to close all my pieces looking like vases because I didn’t want people to see it as something useful anymore. I wanted the piece to exist by shape and line.”
