About the Item

CC #2 is an artwork by the English artist Tom Price. Dimensions are 120 × 80,5 cm (47.2 × 31.7 in). Each work in the series is a unique print. Tom Price’s artistic practice is centered on materials and driven by innovative, experimental processes. He describes his approach as “working in collaboration with materials, processes, and phenomena, where the final physical outcome emerges from mutual consent.” Coal is one of the artist’s preferred mediums. He is drawn to its aesthetic qualities, particularly its darkness and opacity, as well as its intrinsic and functional properties. Coal is one of the purest forms of carbon—a fundamental element of all known life and a crucial energy source for humans. Through hands-on experimentation, Price has developed a deep mastery of this material, enabling him to create a diverse range of works. In his CC series (Carbon Copy), Price draws inspiration from carbon paper, traditionally used to replicate documents. Here, carbon is not merely a medium for copying but serves as the central subject and the starting point of his creative process. The material is employed as the key component in black printer toner: toner powder is applied to a surface, partially displaced with compressed air, and then photographed. The resulting image is printed in black toner on an aluminium substrate, forming the final artwork. In this process, the camera and printer function simply as tools that facilitate the material’s transformation from one state to another.
