About the Item

Counterpart was originally a commission for the Duke of Devonshire and Chatsworth House, in England.
This piece is comprised of two blocks of diametrically opposed materials. The bright one (with lighting inside) glows from within and illuminates some of the internal cracks and fissures. The other block is made from coal which has a very different effect to the resin, and actually absorbs light. According to the artist : "Counterpart refers to something that is used to place something else on, as a counterpart to the work that goes on top of it. When you’re viewing the work, the work is of primary importance but then when you go to sit, it suddenly becomes a functional piece and the person assumes the position of prime importance."
