About the Item

Synthesis LS1 is a unique sculpture by English artist Tom Price. Dimensions are 208 × 45 × 45 cm (81.8 × 17.7 × 17.7 in). The dimensions include the base of the sculpture, dimensions of the column: approx. 15 L x 18 D cm (5.9 × 7 in). Weight: resin 45 kg, steel channel 28 kg, plate 19kg. The artwork is lit by LED tape light (lifetime is typically around 50,000 hours). The work stands as a vertical stele or monolith of pure geometry, defined by the precise steel base and the stacked columnar form. Yet its true essence lies within: a series of transparent blocks encase a dense, vibrant mixture of resin and tar. The contrast is striking—the clinical exactness of the metallic support set against the internal, organic-like turbulence. Subtle internal LEDs enhance the gem-like quality of the blocks, revealing veins of amber and dark, solidified deposits. By crystallizing tar and resin within a steel and acrylic framework, Price invites a dialogue on what nature absorbs and transforms from our era. The sculpture becomes a profound exploration of transformation, synthesis, and humanity’s impact on geological matter. Tom Price’s practice is material-driven, guided by experimental and innovative processes. The artist describes his approach as “working in collaboration with materials, processes, and phenomena, with the final physical outcome emerging as a product of mutual consent.” In the Synthesis series, Price challenges resin and tar to coexist, experimenting with chemical reactions through heat and catalysis. As tar fragments expand within the resin blocks, fissures, voids, and cracks emerge, altering the original appearance, color, and character of the resin. Through this process, a new material entity is born from their synthesis. While the artist initiates and directs the creative process, the chemical reactions themselves remain partly uncontrolled, ensuring that each outcome is unique and surpasses his initial imagination. The Synthesis series produces works of striking, enigmatic beauty—captivating viewers with their intricate forms, subtle color gradations, and dynamic reflections of light.
