The Viga series marks a new phase in Tom Price's artistic journey, focusing on the use of ancient, natural materials—specifically, 15th-century wooden beams salvaged from a house in Palma de Mallorca. Attracted by their historical richness, Price reimagines these beams in a distant future where natural and artificial elements become indistinguishable. Through this transformation, he explores humanity's evolving relationship with nature and the legacy of human industry, capturing a moment where synthetic and organic forms merge seamlessly.
Encrusted with synthetic, mineral-like formations, these beams retain traces of past utility—carved notches, old nails, worn ends, and insect marks—all testament to their historical function. In Viga, Price envisions a future Anthropocene era where our material culture has integrated back into nature. Known internationally for his experimental approach to materials, Price’s works have been exhibited globally and are part of prestigious collections, including MOMA San Francisco and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.
