About the Item
Authentic Fossil Plate by Unknown Artist. Measures 12 inches in diameter. The fossils are shown in cross section, as the stone used to make the plate has been sliced from a larger piece. The piece is in Good/Fair Condition-there are cosmetic imperfections due to age and handling/piece had been damaged and repaired. Prehistoric crustaceans, related to squid and octopus. Their characteristic spiral bodies are instantly recognizable, and are distinguished in their unfurled version from other fossils by the eight sections that make up their forms. They may have been excellent swimmers and, like squid, may have been able to squirt ink at attackers.
