Large Neolithic Flint Axe from Sweden

Circa 4000-3000 BC

This tactile stone tool was finely knapped from a large piece of mottled orange and black flint, with beautiful marks resembling stitching along the edges, and has a thick old collection patina. It was crafted in Sweden during the Neolithic Revolution, a period which saw the transition from hunting and gathering to a more sedentary, farm-oriented lifestyle, thus laying the foundations for the rise of civilisation. “This regularity of [the axe’s structure] implies design, the application of forethought, and an intelligent purpose ... Nothing surely but the human hand could have directed a series of blows not only parallel one with the other on each surface ... resulting in producing a symmetrical form.” Joseph Preswitch, “XVII. On the Occurrence of Flint-implements, associated with the Remains of Animals of Extinct Species in Beds of a late Geological Period, in France at Amiens and Abbeville, and in England at Hoxne” (1859) Height on stand: 13 1/2 inches (34.3 cm) Provenance: From the collection of Henning Catos, Sweden. With Swedish export licence.
