Natural Freeform Gogotte Formation Sculpture

Oligocene, circa 30 million years ago

This arresting and whimsical gogotte was finely modelled by the movement of silica-rich water through loose sand near Fontainebleau, France. It derives its nickname “Guetteur” (“Lookout”) from its rounded forms and thick stone folds, which evoke an abstract figure surmounted by a large eye, seemingly peering out of the composition. The striking forms of gogottes have fascinated their beholders for centuries and inspired many artists, making them highly coveted works of nature. Each of these sandstone concretions is entirely unique – a masterpiece slowly fashioned by the hands of Nature over time. "We can never hope to compete with nature in the beauty and delicacy of her forms or colours…" Sir Thomas Lawrence, quoted by John Constable Height: 15 3/4 inches (40 cm) Width: 11 4/5 inches (30 cm) Provenance: Found in the sand dunes of Fontainebleau, 1989-1994.
