About
"As one gradually draws away from a Haniwa, the sculptured eyes become real eyes, now truly the 'windows of the soul'; the whole face lights up with life; and the entire Haniwa figure itself seems about to come alive."
Tetsuro Watsuji (1889-1960)
This exceptional example of Japanese Haniwa sculpture probably depicts a Shinto shamaness and displays unusual incisions, perhaps scarification. Haniwa figural sculpture was placed atop the burial mounds under which the Japanese élite were buried. These burial mounds, or kofun, gave its name to the period of history which saw the ascent of the Yamato clan, Japan's ruling dynasty to this day.
