About the Item

An acute observer of nature Barye was fascinated by the dramatic depiction of animals in the wild. These anomalies bronzes can sit on mantles and desks and elevate a room tremendously. Modeled 1841-44, Taureau Attaque par un Tigre is a variation for the mythological beast featured in Barye's Thésée combattant le Minotaure, the celebrated work rejected by the Salon in 1843. Signed: BARYE (top of self-base), Marked: F. BARBEDIENNE. FONDUER. (rear of self-base) Incised 125 and 9512 (ink, under) Exhibited: Salon 1819 (2nd Prize), 1832, 1851 (another cast presumably), Exposition Universelle, 1855 (Grand Medal), 1867 (Grand Medal) (another cast presumably)
