About the Item
The wall sculpture Bride III is part of Mcgilvray's series'Women in Wood and Metal which celebrates the strength and beauty of women. Although the female figure is the starting point for all of the pieces in this series, a strictly natural depiction is abandoned and the female subjects are abstracted to their essential elements. The style is contemporary with a touch of Art Deco. Bride III is composed solely of layer upon layer of aluminum triangles. These triangles however, are arranged in such a way as to resemble the brides veil and train flowing and trailing behind her.The piece is sophisticated and elegant in that it is successful in conveying the idea of the bride using only a few basic shapes and gestures. McGilvray's sculptures of women, which range from unadorned nudes to, as in Bride III, a bride with flowing veil and train, all depict women caught in a moment of beauty. Artist Camey McGilvray is a Los Angeles based artist who uses wood, wire and metal to create abstract, contemporary wall sculptures and freestanding sculptures. The work is purely imaginative and evocative rather than representational and relies on the shape and placement of the materials, as well as cast shadows, color and texture to convey the idea to the viewer. McGilvray was born and raised in New Jersey. She studied art at St. Lawrence University, The University of the Americas in Mexico City, and the New School and Art Students league in New York City, where she lived before settling in Los Angeles. Her work is included in private collections and exhibited nationally.
