The wall sculpture Bride I is part of McGilvray�۪s series ���Women in Wood and Metal,� which celebrates the strength and beauty of women. Although the female figure is the starting point for all of the pieces in this series, a strictly natural depiction is abandoned and the female subjects are abstracted to their essential elements. The style is contemporary with a touch of Art Deco. Bride I is an assemblage consisting of component parts specifically created for this piece from wood and metal as well as other parts (note the Bride�۪s bouquet) selected from McGilvray�۪s large treasury of found objects and recycled into this new creation. McGilvray�۪s sculptures of women, which range from unadorned nudes to, as in Bride I, elaborately dressed brides, all depict women caught in a moment of beauty. Artist Camey McGilvray is a Los Angeles based artist who uses wood, wire and metal to create abstract, contemporary wall sculptures and freestanding sculptures. The work is purely imaginative and evocative rather than representational and relies on the shape and placement of the materials, as well as cast shadows, color and texture to convey the idea to the viewer. McGilvray was born and raised in New Jersey. She studied art at St. Lawrence University, The University of the Americas in Mexico City, and the New School and Art Students league in New York City, where she lived before settling in Los Angeles. Her work is included in private collections and exhibited nationally.
