About the Item

Color, narrative, and rhythm are the hallmarks of Dutch artist Joseph Corneille’s work. Corneille disrupted the staid world of Dutch art in the twentieth-century as a founder of the Cobra movement. The avant-garde movement which drew heavily on surrealism radicalized color and threw open the doors for American modernism in Europe. Corneille’s later work eschewed the abstractions and action-based tumult of the Cobra movement to explore the range of possibility in more figurative art. Although his work was whimsical at times, Corneille never strayed far from the strident expressionism that had come to define his work. Corneille’s work, as with this curious and curiously clad cat, reached back into the narrative figures and dramatic gestures of pre-Raphaelite religious scenes, while keeping close to burgeoning American comic and post-impressionist explorations.

Viewing Elspeth Halvorsen Vevers’ box constructions is a lot like a walk in the moonlight. What we believe to be true in the hard brightness of daytime reality dissolves into an amorphous space of multiple possibilities and perspectives. Describing these constructions, Boston Globe art critic Cate McQuaid wrote “a container becomes the state for an insinuating abstract narrative.” Halvorsen was instrumental in organizing the much-heralded cooperative Rising Tide Gallery. She was not only a talented sculptor, but was also the matriarch of the uniquely gifted Vevers family of artists: her husband was painter Tony Vevers...
