About the Item
eyelets, fabric, thread on wood
Denise Yaghmourian’s material based sensibility results in works that reference Feminism, Minimalism, Post-Minimalism, the Pattern and Decoration movement, as well as contemporary concerns about art making. Originally a painter, Yaghmourian discovered new materials for an experimental body of work by scavenging through fabric stores, thrift shops, and toy stores. Since then she has used objects associated with mass production and consumption, transforming the mundane into formal studies of shape, color, and pattern. Through her work she embraces the obvious and accepts the ubiquitous manufactured nature of today’s society. Yaghmourian creates works that are sophisticated, detailed, meditative, and elegant in their process and end result, but powerful in their tension between material and content.

Denise Yaghmourian
Denise Yaghmourian is sculptor, painter and installation artist. Her forms are rooted in past art movements and styles, yet they resonate with artistic concerns of today. The simplicity of her surfaces reveals a material-based sensibility while evoking deeper concepts tied to the human psyche. Yaghmourian’s practice often involves the alteration of sentimental items from her past in an effort to portray the way memories are stored and dealt with. Attachment, acceptance of loss, and newfound appreciations all play critical roles in her depictions of memory. Denise Yaghmourian studied art at Arizona State University and works as a full time artist. She has exhibited her work at The Tucson Museum of Art, Phoenix Art Museum, Ceres Gallery in NYC, Bogena Galerie in Saint Paul de Vence, France and SOHO20 Chelsea Gallery in NYC. Her work is included in the public collections of Banner Desert Samaritan Hospital and The Institute for Mental health Research.
