Adam Monture & Jeremy Freiburger
Heron - figurative, Six Nations Mohawk, animal, LED, aluminum outdoor sculpture

2023

About the Item

The majesty of woodland birds and animals is celebrated in these striking metal sculptures by the Six Nations Mohawk artist Adam Monture. Monture’s beautiful paintings of woodland animals—the heron, deer, bears, wolves, turtles, and loons were re-imagined as 3-dimensional sculptures hand forged from aluminum. Each animal and bird appears as a ‘double’—one image mirrors the other; the exterior sculpture painted a dramatic matte black with two animals facing one another. LED lights lit at night add to the drama of the sculptures by casting shadows. The project featuring 10 animals was first installed in Hamilton as part of the city’s Winterfest celebration. “That (installation) all started from the one painting, from the bear painting.” Adam Monture A self-taught artist Adam Monture had created a series of colourful paintings called “The Woodlands After Dark”; one of which—'the bear’ had been purchased by Jeremy Freiburger. Freiburger works with Cobalt Connects, a non-profit that supports cultural projects. In collaboration with Freiburger, the images from Monture’s paintings were used to create these sculptures.

    By Guillaume Lachapelle

Text by Terence Sharpe There is a moment in Andrei Tarkovsky’s Solaris (1972) when the character Hari commits suicide by drinking liquid oxygen. As she is not actually a human, but an artificial hybrid product of the mysterious planet and the protagonists’ memories, she heals rapidly and is alive again minutes later. Her choice to take her own life is poignant, seemingly the action of a being becoming aware of its hopeless infinitude. Her realization that while the men will die on the space station or elsewhere, her existence is that of immortality, a deeply alienating notion that causes her to seek her own destruction. The Montreal artist Guillaume Lachapelle has one work that prompts a sense of eternal alienation that echoes Hari’s tragedy. The work greets the viewer with a empty doorway flanked by clinically white bookshelves...
