About the Item
Béla Bartók, Hungarian composer and pianist, is considered to be one of the most important composers of the 20th century. Conceived in 1947 while Wein was in Rome after having been awarded the Prix de Rome, the highest honor in the world of sculpture. The accompanying grant for study afforded Wein the opportunity to observe firsthand the classic sculptural creations of the Italian Renaissance masters. This was a time of great importance in Wein’s career. Models from this era are extremely rare today and are highly desirable to collectors.

Provenance: Private Collection Washington, DC
Stupendous patina on this work and a great size for any table or spot. This work is a melding of Art Deco lines and influence in style as well as the work of the 1940's which was characterized by representational work done in expressive and stylized form.
The appropriation, embracing, and ultimate re-interpretation of the classical form provided Wein with the basis for his modernization of these timeless prototypes. The honing and mastery of these time-honored skills afforded Wein the opportunity to rejuvenate a classical tradition, an approach that placed Wein in a category separate from his contemporary sculptors. Yet Wein was not content to change an established aesthetic but rather to bridge the Classical and the Modern, not to refute but to confirm, and thus to legitimize both the old and the new, what had come and what was to be.
