About the Item

This striking sculpture presents an elegant and elongated figure of a ballerina, exuding both grace and strength. Crafted with meticulous detail, the figure showcases an alluring contrast between the delicacy of ballet and the robustness of sculptural form. The ballerina is poised on a ladder-like structure, embodying a sense of ascension and aspiration. Her elongated limbs are exaggerated, creating a sense of fluidity and movement, while her proportions defy classical norms, leading the viewer to a fresh perception of balance and poise. The use of a muted turquoise patina on her tutu and shoes adds a touch of subtle color, enhancing the artwork’s visual appeal without overwhelming its minimalist aesthetic. This choice of color also evokes a sense of antiquity, suggesting timelessness and lending an air of classical elegance. Her angular, geometric lines contrast sharply with the soft folds of the tutu, offering an intriguing juxtaposition that reflects both strength and delicacy. The overall form is sleek and streamlined, embodying the essence of modernist abstraction while remaining deeply rooted in the traditional imagery of ballet. This piece uniquely captures the spirit of movement and stillness, portraying the dancer not only as an artist of physical grace but as a symbol of perseverance and aspiration. This artwork stands as a captivating testament to the blend of artistic traditions, inviting contemplation and admiration.

'King of Farts' original ceramic vase and relief signed by Michael Gross
By Michael Gross
Located in Milwaukee, WI
The ceramic sculptures of Wisconsin artist Michael Gross are personal narratives that reveal an unusual mix of earthly magic and primal vitality. The artist works in a variety of forms, including figurines, large vessels and furniture. The present vase is among the top tier of his works from the 1980s, showing multiple playful figures in relief around the vessel. In his Neo-Expressionist style, hearkening to the works of Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, the figures are colored in painterly polychrome. Also, not unlike the painted narrative vessels of Ancient Greece, though much more subversive, many of the figures and stories are identified with text: 'King of Fart,' 'Dance Little Sister,' 'Girls for Every Boy,' and 'Beach Boy.' 22 x 13 x 12 inches overall Signed 'Gross' near base Dated 1986 near upper rim SELECTED COLLECTIONS INCLUDING WORKS BY GROSS: Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; Sharon Lynne Wilson...
