About the Item

Clarke was born in Montana in 1896. His first formal artistic training was under Albin Polasek–a renowned 20th-century sculptor–at the Art Institute of Chicago, followed by further study under Robert Aitken at the Art Students’ League in New York. Shortly thereafter, Clark traveled to Asia to explore and be immersed in its foreign cultures. During his three-year sojourn from 1924 to 1927¬–first in Japan, then in China, and ending in Southeast Asia–he studied Buddhist art and wood carving and created small, free-standing bronze sculptures derived from these Oriental styles. Mei Kwei, carved in mahogany wood and Yang Kwei Fei, the famed Chinese beauty, were among the works he produced in Asia. Clark’s travels inspired Asian-influenced works executed by the artist and exhibited at the Fogg Art Museum in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1927. The exhibition was so well received that the works were sent to different venues across the country. Clark did not completely depart from the Western Academic traditions in which he was initially immersed but rather he infused the Oriental sculptural techniques such as polychromy¬ (colored patination) and decorative features into his works, resulting in an intriguing fusion between Eastern and Western art. In In the Path of the Sun, conceived during his time in Asia, Clark demonstrated his sculptural mastery through the application of Oriental motifs to the female nude, a traditionally Western subject. The delicate facial features–arched eyebrows, slanted eyes, small nose–are typical of early Chinese Buddhist art from the Tang Dynasty (618–907 CE). Nonetheless, the figure’s hair falls perfectly in articulated curls, showing the influence of the Art Deco movement of the 1920s and 1930s. More impressive is Clark’s ability to transcend the static nature of sculpture. The sensuous lines of the figure’s body, from the raised arms to the extended right leg, assume a rhythmic quality that is atypical of traditional early 20th-century Western sculpture. In all of his works, Clark’s appreciation for Asian art is evident. However, the artist finds a balance between the Oriental style and his Western training. What results is a style that is uniquely Clark’s–one that is grounded in Academic realism yet infused with hints of the exotic.
