About the Item

Anneke Bogardus "Poppy №4" 2023 Entirely hand sculpted. Raku fired. 5 3/4” tall, 12” around Raku firing is an ancient Japanese ceramics technique. The Raku technique is essentially when ceramics are taken from the kiln while they are still glowing red hot and are then placed in a material that would be able to catch fire, such as sawdust or newspaper. This technique is used to starve the piece of oxygen, which creates a myriad of colors within the glaze. Raku firing creates completely unique pieces as there is never a certainty as to how the final piece will turn out. About the Artist Anneke Bogardus sculptures embody nature and the human touch. Each piece is sculpted by hand, allowing the composition to naturally form as it is felt. Anneke has always been inspired by nature as it evolves through the seasons and in life. Each piece is a physical interpretation of a subject morphing from one state to the next. Anneke’s style is unique in that her finger strokes can be seen as they make any movement on the clay’s surface. The glazes for each piece vary between natural crackles, metallics, blues, and matt surfaces reacting to the firing. Anneke is a New Jersey born, New York based artist. She began sculpting animals with clay at the age of 5 in the local arts center. Anneke studied at the Parsons School of Design focusing on the sculptural elements of fashion. She also studied with distinguished artists and designers, such as Nick Mackman, Maor Zabar, and Carlos Falchi. Anneke’s pieces have been sold locally and internationally, with clients from New York to Japan. Anneke works with ceramics, metal, glass, skins, polymers, live plant materials, among others - any medium to create. Her latest work is in ceramics, focused on sculptures made from differing clay bodies and natural glazes. Her work is completely hand-made in her studio in Greenpoint, Brooklyn or at the Long Beach Island Arts Foundation where she maintains an arts residency. Anneke’s love for all things sculptural, nature based, flora, and for animals are always reoccurring themes in any body of work.
