"Los Infortunios de la Virtud" (The Misfortunes of Virtue) leaves behind a dichotomous trace of manifest sophistication and delicacy, shaped by characters, situations, atmospheres, and objects that constitute a story very similar to a cautionary tale that does not let itself be dragged by something so ephemeral and vulgar as good taste, but to is governed by an irony that always chisels with his intelligent chisel and serves as a synecdoche argument.
Born in the city of Monterrey Nuevo León in 1973, Armando de la Garza began his painting studies at a very young age but it was not until 1995 that he finished studying architecture and began his professional career in the art world. He has exhibited in more than 40 group exhibitions in the USA, France, Austria, Czech Republic, Hong Kong, Australia, Italy, Spain, and Mexico.
Individually he has exhibited more than 25 times highlighting "Anywhere This May Be" in Ginocchio Gallery in DF, "Once Upon a Time" at the Center for the Arts of the city of Monterrey, "ID" in Emma Molina Gallery, San Pedro Garza Garcia. "The Misfortunes of Virtue" Oblyon Gallery, Barcelona, ??Spain, "Horror Vacui" Gallery Isabel Croxatto, Santiago de Chile "Portraits of the court" eleventh alternative gallery or "Biota" in the space of Area Creative 42 in Rivarolo Italy, among others. He has been awarded several awards such as the acquisition prize in the XVII Review of the plastic Nuevoleonesa and first place in the first biennial of the German Cultural Center as well as selections in the IX FEMSA Biennial and in different issues of the Review of plastic Nuevoleonesa, and the National Encounter of young art among others.

View AllWho Washes the Feet of Mary Magdalene. Sculpture made in Porcelain, hand-painted
Located in Miami Beach, FL
This piece recalls the art historical depictions of Mary Magdalene. Though she is often contextualized as the one who washed Jesus’s feet, Hodge centers her as the subject and asks “Who takes care of her?”. She answers with the scene of another woman washing her feet, which speaks to the ways that women’s care for one another is often unseen.
The three series that make up her thesis show all center around the woman as an art historical trope who becomes a contemporary archetype of tenderness and tenacity with her own narrative. The tradition of the woman as muse or object is questioned and turned upside down as she gives her women the position of subject, i.e., the position of power. The jars, which uphold pairs of women, are the ultimate overturn of male dominance as she removes and replaces all male characters from famous artworks with women...

History Lesson Power Is Always Taken. Hand Carved Large Porcelain Vase
Located in Miami Beach, FL
This vessel is one of the first from the series of pots Unsung Muses and prioritizes the narrative of Hatshepsut, as she was perhaps the most successful female pharaoh of Egypt. She brought prosperity and peace to Egypt through her work to improve infrastructure and trade routes. Her success was so great that her male successors attempted to erase her from history by literally chiseling her image off the walls and attempting to destroy all statues of her. By honoring her existence in this large vessel, I center the narrative of women’s power...

Also known as forget-me-not jugs or spirit jars, memory jugs are African American folk art objects that honor a loved one who has recently passed. Small tokens and mementos of the deceased are gathered and affixed to the exterior of a jug or vase, an abundance of memories that celebrates a life lived to the fullest.
Michael Thompson applies this tradition to his own practice, creating tactile assemblages of this and that. Formed in the manner of collage, each jug honors the lost memories of generations past and his own memories of personally discovering each item. With varied sources for materials including Kyoto, Turkey, and Mexico, a great number of the found shards are 18th and 19th century ceramics...
