Before his death in 1917 Rodin donated his estate and collection of artworks to France. He also donated the right to cast his works posthumously in editions from the original plasters or molds. The French limited the castings of each piece to editions of 12. The first eight were offered for public purchase and the last four were reserved for museums and institutions.
Some of Rodin’s most famous works were never cast in his lifetime. However, Rodin specified posthumous coatings by the Rodin Museum. The art market has supported the sales of the authorized posthumous castings by the museum. This bronze was originally purchased from Parke Bernet Auction House in the 1970’s. (now Sotheby’s

Auguste Rodin
Auguste Rodin was a French sculptor widely regarded as the father of modern sculpture. Breaking away from the idealized forms of classical sculpture, Rodin introduced a more naturalistic, emotionally charged style that emphasized texture, movement, and human emotion. His work often explored themes of love, struggle, and the human condition. Rodin's most iconic works include The Thinker, The Kiss, and The Gates of Hell, many of which began as smaller studies and evolved into monumental masterpieces. His innovative approach to form, fragmentation, and surface detail challenged traditional academic norms and set a new direction for modern sculpture. Despite initial criticism and controversy, Rodin’s work was eventually celebrated as groundbreaking, and he achieved widespread recognition during his lifetime. Today, his sculptures are displayed in major museums and public spaces worldwide, symbolizing the transition from classical to modern art.

About
John Edward Jones was born in Dublin on May 2nd, 1806. He was the son of a miniature painter Edward Jones. He was trained as an engineer under Alexander Nimmo and worked with him on many important works in Ireland, including the building of the bridge at Waterford between 1829 in 1832, of which he was in charge. A taste and an aptitude for sculpture induced him to relinquish his prospects as an engineer and he commenced practice in London as a sculptor. He achieved considerable success, especially in portrait busts, and was employed by many notable persons of the time. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1844 and continue to do so until his death. He executed a considerable number of bust of Irish personages. He paid occasional visits to Dublin where he contributed to the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1847, 1852,1853 and 1854. A full-length statue by him of Sir Robert...
