Bethany Krull
Porcelain Tortoise "Capsized" by Bethany Krull

2018

About the Item

This capsized tortoise was hand-built in porcelain by New York artist, Bethany Krull. Among the larger of her porcelain pieces it is built solid with over 50 pound of clay on a custom wooden armature. Once the form is complete the artist painstakingly cuts the piece apart, hollows out the interior clay to a wall thickness of half and inch and then reassembles the entire now-hollow form. Each and every seam then needs to be covered and hidden before the final surface texture is meticulously applied dot by dot with slip trailed porcelain. The fissure in the overturned turtle's shell sprouts new life, a tiny meadow of artificial grass popping up through the crack which illustrates the fragility of nature but also its perseverance and resilience.
