About the Item

A few years ago, I began developing high relief wall mounted sculptures, a departure from my longstanding practice of figures and heads sculpted in clay. I was seeking some of the spontaneity and contemporary voice I’d been envious of in collage artists’ work and wanted to find a way to get that energy into sculpture. By modeling and pressing found objects into clay, effectively sculpting a mold, the subsequent cast would be a kind of sculptural collage. The process was hiding in plain sight, incorporating in a mixed around way many of the same techniques sculptors commonly use for sculpting and casting works. After much experimentation and thought I settled on casting in the materials of super-hard “hydrocal” plasters blended with ground Carrara marble, which helped refract light in such a way that the works would read like carved relief sculptures. In this way I sought to link our culture’s achievements with those through history celebrated by sculptors in this same white stone. Note that Cscape #52 and Cscape #53 were created sequentially and are the same in size and composition, containing many of the same elements differing principally only by the larger switch and outlet elements in the second piece.
