About the Item
In my effort to make the sculpted bust a viable contemporary art form I have tried several approaches. This under-life-size piece is an early example of my current preferred approach where a ‘tightly’ modeled head and expressive face is coupled with a dynamic, abstracted hair form. The juxtaposition and resulting tension makes for a dynamic presence in the actual piece.
The patina is one I developed over many years, selected for its ability to accentuate the sculpted form and reflect light in a way similar to that of human skin. This patina contains finely ground metal and stone powders and is applied in several hardened layers creating a durable, glowing finish.
The base is steel, of my design, and suitable for tabletop or shelf.

BIO My sculptural practice engages traditional sculptural forms to explore cultural questions that puzzle or intrigue me. I generally find myself introducing some contemporary material, found object or other element into classical figurative or representational contexts. In recent years my work has centered on the human head/bust. Prior to that I developed a large body of high-relief, wall-hung sculptures made by pressing objects into clay, thereby creating a mold, then pouring over it a single cast of hard plasters blended with powdered Carrara marble. Bob was born in Oakland, CA and lives and has his studio in Rye, NY. His work has been exhibited in solo shows in Santa Fe (Jane Sauer Gallery) and New York (Lower East Side-Dacia Gallery and Bushwick- Anthony Philip Fine Art) as well as group shows in Paris, Hong Kong, Italy and throughout the U.S. His sculptures are in permanent collections of the Burchfield-Penney Museum in Buffalo, NY and Museo Arte Contemporanea Sicilia in Italy. The work has been reviewed in numerous art publications including Hyperallergic and featured in the NY Times, Wall St Journal and other national media. Bob spent 8 years in formal study of sculpture, centering on his years at the Art Students League of New York.

Three Graces with Smartphone
Located in Rye, NY
This piece was from the period when I created standing figures in clay working from live models. These three women were friends, students at SUNY Purchase, and enjoyed working together to develop their respective poses and the overall composition.
The piece derives from three specific art-historical references, fused into something contemporary.
The first, from the title, is from a long tradition of Three Graces sculptures...

Kristen Newell was born in a small town on the coast of Massachusetts, where from a very early age, she demonstrated a strong propensity for the arts. Important additional inspiration came from her family and from the family of a childhood friend, where Kristen found herself surrounded by the work of Paul Manship, her friend’s grandfather and one of America’s greatest sculptors.
With increased focus on her art, along with winning numerous awards throughout high school, Newell eagerly enrolled in the arts program at University of Vermont and augmented her studies with a valuable year at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
Upon graduation, Newell moved back to Cleveland to begin her art career and started participating in group shows, including River Gallery and the Ohio State...
