Bronze with Gold Leaf
Based on Boky Hackel-Ward’s self-portrait, this sculpture is not only about what can happen to us when we get lost in a love that seems to be grander than grand and we lose our own identity. It is also about women’s place in our society and that self-effacing nature of the role that is imposed on us. It is about hope, about reacting and taking one’s just place in life. It is about not allowing anyone to take possession of our spirit just because they think they can.

BIO:
Boky Hackel-Ward is a German-born sculptor who began life as a conceptual artist, restorer of Old Master paintings, photographer, musician, writer and poet. As a conceptualist and a polyglot, language has always been extremely important in her work. Boky Hackel-Ward’s work is honest and personal, exposing her vulnerabilities to the world as a way to heal. Raw with emotion, her stance as a strong woman is untethered, yet hidden under a veil of fragility. Boky's first exhibition, "SOMEWHERE WITHIN", opened at Hilton Contemporary in Chicago in May 2019. It is the first time Boky Hackel-Ward and husband/sculptor Blake Ward collaborated on a dual exhibition in the United States.

"Abstraction versus objectivity and an immaterial world that exists beyond the obvious….Mikhail Larionov’s words to Natalia Goncharova in 1900: “Open your eyes to your eyes” is the beginning of a tremendous love story and artistic collaboration between what would one day become a husband and wife creative entity. Each with their own road to follow yet passing through all the stages of love that culminate in the lyrical. “Open your eyes to your eyes” is a sentiment that very much mirrors our creative development and our story.
Creating in the shadow of my husband work has been as painful for me, as working in the vast emptiness alone was for Blake. My work and presence completes his work. Emptiness experienced together is less onerous and is a catalyst to creativity.
I exist there, by his side.
My artistic development and sensibilities were formatted, not only by the institutions, but more importantly by a life lived in a conceptual world where abstraction and form have battled it out with the linguist and the philosopher and have led to an ephemeral body of work. Blake has taught me, as I have taught him. We are opening our eyes to our eyes.
My new work is about the healing that occurs when we embrace love.
I suppose our collaboration is a result of the love that we have for one another. From the very beginning we have always tried to teach one another and share our knowledge. We each bring different things to the table; the blogs, the sculpture techniques, the conceptual, the wax and the clay, we share this beautiful life together. ARTIST STATEMENT:
"The beauty, grace and symmetry of traditional figurative sculpture has always called to me. It is my school and my obsession. My language is the figure and I feel the need to comment on the human condition, sometimes distorted by demons, and other times enchanted by all that is pure within us.
I have renewed my relationship to the human form. It has undergone a metamorphosis from silent conformity, where the rules and proportions are tantamount to a partial figure where the human condition becomes of primary importance. I want to stretch the canons of classical realism by giving beauty another voice that challenges socio-political norms. I speak of spirit and courage, of heritage and of imperishable strength.
Today I challenge the traditional figure, creating a characterization of the Spirit; a metaphor to our inner world that might encourage us to seek a deeper understanding of ourselves. Consciousness, as a philosophical concept, can lead us many places, from the empirical world of the cognitive sciences to a theoretical one, where psychology attempts to provide the answers. It is my intention to reach into the 21st. century using sculpture to transcend disciplinary boundaries between the physical bodies in bronze and the self-knowledge and understanding of the ethereal realm that is our internal landscape."
