About the Item

Feline is a unique smoke-fired stoneware, resin, plaster and clay sculpture by French contemporary artist Cécile Raynal, dimensions are 78 × 35 × 60 cm (30.7 × 13.7 × 23.6 in). This sculpture is unique and comes with an authenticity certificate. This piece depicts a seated cat, upright and with an attentive expression. The feline is slender and graceful. This piece is part of the sculptural installation Chœur de bêtes (Choir of Beasts), which brings together eleven animals encircling a cephalophorous figure. Each animal, similar in scale, defies natural proportions and adopts at times fantastical postures, reinforcing the mysterious and dreamlike quality of the scene. The artist describes the installation with these words: “Hybrid beasts and creatures, peoples, mass-culture: wolf, hare, fox, raccoon, goat, donkey, crow, feline, badger, world-tree, birder. So many motifs, subjects, metaphorical presences. […] They embody other spirits, other imaginations, other ways of seeing, moving and being moved. The peoples of the beasts suffer us, deplore us, since always and everywhere, we fabulate them. They represent us, they duplicate us. […] So I model great silences between man and beast, envisaging possible alliances. The future is only possible in an alliance, a common field, an earthy and spiritual heart.” A long-term project, Chœur de bêtes (Choir of Beasts) was exhibited as part of Cécile Raynal’s solo show À la table des Dames (At the Ladies’ Table), held in 2025 at the historic Montivilliers Abbey in Normandy. A former home to women, nuns, and abbesses, the abbey provided a resonant setting for Raynal’s exploration of works that blend portraits of women with animal figures. Her sculptures resist charm and can at times be unsettling. Raw and expressive, they carry the visible traces of their making—of struggle, transformation, and persistence—yet they rise with vitality. They conjure a world where the animal, feminine, instinctive, and defiant are embraced as vital energies. Within the restored abbey, the exhibition spans fifteen years of the French sculptor’s distinctive artistic path (more information on the exhibition here). Raynal’s practice moves between her studio in Normandy and residencies in liminal spaces—prisons, hospitals, convents—where she sculpts clay portraits informed by encounters with the people she meets. Back in her studio, she expands upon these experiences by drawing from a broad spectrum of myths, folktales, and literature, giving life to hybrid figures that blur the line between human and animal. Through the presence of animal forms, Raynal invites viewers to witness the shared language and subtle exchanges that exist between humans and beasts.
