About the Item

Hare is a unique smoke-fired stoneware, resin, plaster and clay sculpture by French contemporary artist Cécile Raynal, dimensions are 84 × 30 × 52 cm (33 × 11.8 × 20.4 in). This sculpture is unique and comes with an authenticity certificate. This piece depicts a hare sitting on its hind legs, looking upward. The traces of the artist’s gestures on the surface of the work create plays of light and make the animal’s body lively and expressive. This piece is part of the sculptural installation Chœur de bêtes (Choir of Beasts), which brings together eleven animals arranged around a cephalophorous figure. All similarly sized, the animals defy natural scale and adopt at times surreal postures, intensifying the mysterious tone of the scene. The artist describes the work in these words: “Hybrid beasts and creatures, peoples, mass-culture: wolf, hare, fox, raccoon, goat, donkey, crow, feline, badger, world-tree, birder. So many motifs, subjects, metaphorical presences. […] They embody other spirits, other imaginations, other ways of seeing, moving and being moved. The peoples of the beasts suffer us, deplore us—since always and everywhere, we fabulate them. They represent us, they duplicate us. […] So I model great silences between man and beast, imagining possible alliances. The future is only possible in an alliance, a common field, an earthy and spiritual heart.” The Chœur de bêtes installation, developed over several years, was recently exhibited in Cécile Raynal’s solo show À la table des Dames (At the Ladies’ Table), held at Montivilliers Abbey in Normandy (2025). Once a spiritual home for women—nuns and abbesses—the Abbey sets the stage for Raynal’s work, which blends female portraiture with animal figures. Her sculptures resist charm or softness; raw and sometimes unsettling, they bear visible traces of struggle, of confrontation with matter. Yet they rise, full of presence, evoking a world where the animal, the feminine, the instinctive, and the rebellious are embraced as vital energies. The exhibition spans fifteen years of Raynal’s singular career, highlighting her continuous dialogue between studio practice and residencies in liminal spaces—prisons, hospitals, convents. In these environments, she sculpts clay portraits rooted in personal encounters. Back in her Normandy studio, she deepens this process, weaving in a rich network of myths, stories, and literary sources. The result: sculptures of hybrid beings—part human, part animal—that speak to the invisible threads linking humans and beasts. Through these animal forms, Raynal invites viewers to perceive a shared language, a realm of connection between species.
