About the Item

Lupus is a unique smoke-fired stoneware, resin, plaster and clay sculpture by French contemporary artist Cécile Raynal, dimensions are 90 × 30 × 100 cm (35.4 × 11.8 × 39.3 in) This sculpture is unique and comes with an authenticity certificate. The piece is part of the exhibition “A l’enfant qui nous garde”, which followed an art residency of the artist of eight weeks at the private hospital Natecia in Lyon. The photo shows Lupus exhibited next to the sculpture Wolf Cub. Over the past ten years, the artist has undertaken residencies in secluded and unconventional settings—prisons, retirement homes, hospitals, and cargo ships—where she invites the residents to pose for her. These encounters often become spaces of meaningful exchange and reflection, blurring the line between art and life, a hallmark of Cécile Raynal’s sculptural practice. The resulting portraits reflect the richness of these interactions, capturing individuals of all ages and professions, each bearing their own stories. Through the presence of animal figures in her work, the artist highlights a shared language between humans and beasts, inviting viewers to contemplate the connections, echoes, and emotional resonances that bridge species. The photographs were taken during Cécile Raynal’s solo exhibition À la table des Dames (At the Ladies’ Table), held at Montivilliers Abbey in Normandy in 2025.
