About the Item

The Suitcase is a unique smoke-fired stoneware sculpture by French contemporary artist Cécile Raynal, dimensions are 43 × 60 × 20 cm (16.93 × 23.62 × 7.87 in). This sculpture is a unique piece signed by the artist and comes with a certificate of authenticity. This sculpture was shown in À la table des Dames (At the Ladies’ Table), Cécile Raynal’s solo exhibition at Montivilliers Abbey in Normandy (2025). Presented in a historic site long inhabited by women, nuns, and abbesses, the works bring together portraits of women and animals. Raynal’s sculptures resist seduction; raw and sometimes unsettling, they reveal traces of struggle with matter, yet stand upright and vibrant. They evoke a universe where the animal, feminine, instinctive, and rebellious are embraced as vital forces. The exhibition, set in the restored Abbey, spans fifteen years of the French sculptor’s singular artistic journey (more details here). Raynal’s practice moves between her Normandy studio and residencies in marginal places—prisons, hospitals, convents. There, she sculpts clay portraits drawn from encounters with the people she meets. Back in her studio, she expands this dialogue through myths, tales, and literary sources, creating animals and hybrid beings, half-human, half-animal. The animal figures in her work underscore a shared language and the deep interplay between humans and beasts.
