The 19th century Italian sculptor Cesare Lapini was born in Florence in 1848. Although he later began to exhibit in Rome, Lapini lived and worked in Florence until his death sometime between 1888 and 1898. Lapini’s sculptures often depict women, either as religious or mythological figures, in a style that can be compared to Antonio Canova. A fine example of this is «Amour embrassant Psychée». Some of his most important sculptures include: • The marble sculpture « Rebecca », inspired by the biblical figure, signed and dated on the base, "C. Lapini, Firenze, 1885". • The Carrara marble sculpture group, «Les Lutteurs », inspired by the famous sculpture discovered during the Renaissance and now preserved in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, depicting two men in intense hand-to-hand combat with emphasis on musculature; signed, located and dated "Copia di Flli Lapini, Firenze, 1891" - height 56 cm - width 66 cm - depth 36 cm • The marble sculpture „Psyche abbandonata“, signed and dated, "C. Lapini, Firenze, 1895".
