About the Item

Charles Rumsey was a child prodigy sent to Paris to train in sculpting at age 12. He was not only a prodigy sculptor but an avid horseman and sportsman. His love of horses and animals gave him particular insight in their anatomy and movement and a love of all things horsey. He was an 8 goal polo player with Meadowbrook Polo, he taught his brother in law Averell Harriman to become and accomplished polo player as well. His work went beyond horses and dogs and wildlife to include sculptures of people, and his work had begun transitioning from realism to more post impressionist and even abstract later in his career. Unfortunately, he died at a young age in an automobile accident. He left behind a large body of work that is found in Museums all around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, NYC, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, the Beaux Arts Center Paris.

CHARLES CARY RUMSEY, born in Buffalo, NY in 1879. His interest in sculpture appeared and was encouraged at an early age as he was considered a prodigy his parent sent him to Paris to study art in 1893. Graduated Harvard in 1902, Rumsey returned to Paris where he took a studio in the Latin Quarter and enrolled and the Julian and Colarossi Academies. One professor, Emmanuel Fremiet, a specialist in equestrian statuary, and his training was to have a decisive influence on the young Rumsey. Rumsey was a superb rider and a world-class polo player. His large monuments remain in locations around the world. Edition of 31 American, b. 1961 Jane DeDecker’s energetic and dynamic bronze sculptures serve as a reflection of her own life experiences and those of her closely-knit family. Her twelve nieces and nephews are the primary source of her inspiration, though DeDecker’s sculptures are not portraits. In fact, her loose style leaves her viewers with room for interpretation, so as to see their own lives within her sculptures. This imprecision, combined with her unique ability to capture specific moments to which each viewer can relate on a personal level, regardless of age, give DeDecker’s work a timeless quality that spans generations. DeDecker began her artistic training as a painter at the University of Northern Colorado, until a professor, noticing her joy in the portrayal of shapes and forms, suggested she try her hand at sculpture. Taking his advice, DeDecker went on to study at Gobelins School of Tapestry in Paris, and in returning to Colorado, spent five years as master craftsman to the notable bronze sculptor George Lundeen. DeDecker is a Fellow of the National Sculpture Society and has gone on to receive copious awards, such as the Critics Choice Award from the Kimball Art Museum, Fort Worth, TX.
