About the Item
In Alms Bowl, Cheng-Hsiung Chen depicts an itinerant monk whose body seems to carry the weight of all human suffering. It is a form both humble and dignified, outwardly fragile yet inwardly filled with faith and resilience. The monk’s half-naked figure is wrapped in a robe that hangs upon him like stone, while his body leans slightly forward as if to continue his journey. His bare feet, pressed heavily against the ground, appear swollen with exhaustion, forcing him into stillness. Yet in this moment of hardship, he holds an earthen bowl close to his chest with reverence. His solemn eyes turn inward, and his expression carries both sorrow and quiet joy. Through this figure, Chen conveys how spiritual devotion transforms pain into transcendence, allowing the soul to rise above the body’s trials. In addition to being one of the artist’s signature works, this piece was also chosen as the cover for an important collection of his works.
