About the Item
Growing up in the fishing village of Anping, Cheng-Hsiung Chen was deeply influenced by the lives of local fishermen. Their struggles at sea and their humble joy in a good catch became one of the most enduring inspirations in his art.
Awaiting portrays a fisherman resting by the dock. His body leans back slightly, with his left leg relaxed in a casual posture. His expression, calm yet thoughtful, suggests both a moment of leisure and quiet anticipation, as if imagining the success of the next voyage. The subtle smile and distant gaze reflect the balance between hardship and hope that defined the lives of Anping fishermen.
Although modest in scale, the work demonstrates Chen’s precision in capturing gesture and mood with remarkable vitality.
