About the Item
Tainan’s Anping has long been a fishing community where, towards the end of World War II, fishermen lived between hardship and reward. They rose with the sun, ventured into uncertain seas, and returned with whatever the waters allowed. Though life was demanding, their joy in a successful catch was simple and genuine. Growing up in Anping, sculptor Cheng-Hsiung Chen absorbed these images of resilience and contentment, which became one of the most important inspirations for his art.
Great Catch embodies this spirit. The fisherman stands bare-chested, his muscles powerfully carved to suggest the weight of his catch, yet his posture conveys ease. With a relaxed stance and a satisfied smile, he carries the heavy fish as if it were light. Chen captures not only the physical reality of labor but also the warmth of fulfillment found in everyday life.
