In "Alms Bowl," master sculptor Cheng-Hsiung Chen depicts an itinerant monk whose body seems to carry the weight of all human suffering.
The figure is a study in contrasts: humble yet dignified, outwardly fragile yet inwardly filled with faith. The monk’s half-naked form is wrapped in a robe carved with heavy, rock-like strokes, a signature of Chen's style, while his body leans slightly forward, driven by will. His bare feet press heavily against the ground, swollen with exhaustion, yet he holds an earthen bowl to his chest with deep reverence. His solemn expression carries both sorrow and quiet joy, conveying how spiritual devotion transforms pain into transcendence.
