About the Item

As all of you will know, every Meissen figure is painted individually by an artist. While all Meissen is of high quality, I feel that the present figure is particularly fine, with the soft realistic colouring of the face and intricate detail. This, plus the fact that figure is based on a drawing by Jean Baptiste Greuze, made me famm for her! The young lady depicted is called Louise, and she is depicted asleep in her chair, her left arm resting on a marble top table, her shoes cast aside, and a love letter tucked into her bodice. She was created in circa 1850, after a model by M.V. Acier (1736-1799) and J.C. Schonheit (1730-1805). On the base, the Meiisen crossed swords in underglaze, the incised model No. 'E58', impressed '43' and the initial of the anonymous, mysterious painter "S" in red.

The Letter, young lady in her boudoir 19th Century majestic miniature painting
Located in Norwich, GB
A majestic miniature painting by Victor Mongodin. Painted with extraordinary detail, it depicts a pretty young lady writing a letter in her boudoir. Mongodin clearly delights in painting fabrics... the silk of her skirt, the cotton of her camisole, as well as the luxurious velvets of the curtains and drapery. And then there is the mystery: who is she writing to? Born in Vire in Normandy in 1819, Victor Mongodin had studied with de Rudder. Working in the French Capital...
