CoadeCoade Stone Classical Greek Goddess 'Minerva' Head
About the Item
Minerva, the Roman goddess associated with wisdom, justice, law, victory, and various other domains, holds a prominent position in Roman mythology, appearing in numerous well-known myths. The inspiration for this sculpture stems from an 18th-century original head of Minerva created by Coade.
The visage of Minerva in this sculpture is influenced by a Roman bust dating back to the 2nd century. The original bust bears resemblance to Greek models from the late fourth to early third century B.C. This Roman bust served as the foundation for the larger-than-life Coade statues depicting the four seasons, which are also referenced. The sculpture of Minerva was then adapted by incorporating the distinct elements of a plumed helmet and Minerva's attire.
